ABRSM – Sight Reading Grade 5

Sight Reading plays a very important part when you learn any sorts of instruments.

Grade 5 sight reading is about 8 – 12 bars long, including:

  • key signature(0-4 sharp or flat)
  • chords(up to 4 notes)
  • time signature(4/4, 3/4, 2/4, 6/8)

At this stage, the main mistake students normally making are:

  • Rest, always forget to count the rest in
  • Accidental sharp / flat, where to play them(for example E# or C flat)
  • Mistake at the ending

Normally you will be given 30 sec to study the sight reading piece, you should use this 30 sec to go through the difficult part, normally it will at near the end, with more than 3 notes chords. So use this 30 sec wisely to go though the hard bit.

Be more concentrate and detail when doing the sight reading. In general, If you get the correct notes and time signature you will have around 14 marks.
